Your definition of "a lot" must be quite different from mine, because I find this approach to be a very effective problem solving solution. Of course, there is no way to tell whether any particular proposed solution is going to work or not, but I am much more likely to try something out than to believe someone who makes unsubstantiated generalizations. Note that I'm not judging solutions on the basis of whether I *like* them or not -- I judge them just as much based on whether they *work* or not. I'll be happy to discuss what I believe to be the consequences of particular approaches, but I'm not a "my way or the highway" sort of person about *any* technical decision.
