Another good book is J2EE Design and Development by Rod Johnson

It references the core patterns book and gives some real world examples of a few of 
the most common patterns in the context of showing how to solve design issues. 

I think a new addition is out called .."Design without EJB" or something like that. It 
has a download version from Amazon I believe.
