I've implemented this by relying on the behaviour of the virus scanner
installed on the server. The scanner here will not write a file with a virus
to the location on disk you ask it to - it writes it to a quarantine
directory.

My application uploads the file to the server & then checks to see if the
file was actually written. If it wasn't then I assume the scanner did
something with it & tell the user that the file probably contained a virus.

So, assuming you already have a scanning fileserver somewhere that your app
can access this is a very cheap solution!
