This thread started on the dev list and I am continuing it on the user list.
My biggest problem in doing this is that the "official" release of Commons Validator is so old, and I require features in 1.1.2 dev. The company I work for has a policy concerning use of non-official software releases in production. I wish the Commons Validator project would release "official" releases more independently of Struts. The 1.1.2 dev version seems stable; is there any chance the Validator project could go ahead and make an official release for it?
Since there are only a few users that use Validator standalone, we are waiting for a release of struts so it can be used by a wider group of users. If enough users can test the 1.1.2 unofficial release we can vote on its quality based on feedback of users like you. (I could also provide an unofficial build of the 1.1.2 BRANCH of validator that picks up a few bug fixes since 1.1.2 was cut. I also need to port over a few more bug fixes from the main trubk. This may be necessary since the 1.2.0 version of validator probably won't work with the nightly version of struts but I am not sure on this)
We could probably make wiki entries from users of validator 1.1.2 + to
justify a vote for an official release designation, such as beta. We would need to create categories of the functionality that Validator has
and somehow capture how users have exercised that functionality.
Do you have any idea's , or would you care to organize that ?

Hi Rob,
How would I go about that? I'm just on the mailing list now - I don't contribute or anything.

Since you asked, I am using Commons Validator standalone, for generic object validation.

I would like to entice developers to give the Struts Nightly and/or the commons-validator a try. I am announcing this only on the 'dev' list in the belief that since you subscribed to the 'dev' list you are
generally more advanced. Also since I will be in a crunch for the next
few days I can't promise, that I'll be able to help out is you hit a snag, so having a adventurous spirit helps.
if you haven't been scared away yet theh congradulations !
If you find the following validator features useful, then help us find
any bugs that may be lurking so that the next release of Struts will hopefully make the beta or better rating.and
The 2 Validator features which would be of the most interest are
1) Ability to use multiple forms on the same page.
2) Validation inheritance.
#2 is particularly useful if you have internationalized applications
you don't want to duplicate validations. The commons-validator CVS repository has unit tests demonstrating its use. Make sure to use the new DTD to use these new features.
By the way --both-- features were user contributions, and greatly enhanced the validators usefulness.
Note Struts 1.1 cannot be used with the nightly version of Struts.
The Night build of struts is built with the current Validator. http://cvs.apache.org/builds/jakarta-struts/nightly/
If you use Validator stand alone: http://cvs.apache.org/builds/jakarta-commons/nightly/commons-validator
/
I would love to know how many people use Validator standalone.
