Hi Jan, I would suggest that since this is you and your company's problem, that you might need to invest some of of your own time on it. It's possible that someone on the list might be able to fill in some info but this project is nearly 20 years old and a lot of the details are no longer at the front of people's minds.

It would appear that the reason to keep the BEA reference in the NOTICE.txt is because of BEA doing a lot of the early work on XMLBeans. Have a read of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_XMLBeans for some background. The POI and XMLBeans code is on Subversion (with Git mirrors) so the file changes are searchable. The POI and XMLBeans email lists are also searchable. You could also contact Oracle as they appear to have acquired BEA and its copyrights.
