As it currently stands, SXSSF is intended to support the creation of very large workbooks. A patch has been submitted that makes it possible to edit pre-existing cells but this has not yet been reviewed and applied, at least as far as I know. If you need to open an existing workbook, modify one or more of the cells it already contains and then write the results back to file, you will have to use XSSF, at least for the foreseeable future.
