May be conventionally not. But that does not guarantee that nobody will use
[] anywhere else in other formulae to mean something else... as I had
demonstrated with concatenate() example.

It would have been very helpful if POI was to throw some exception/set some
flag to indicate that it is trying to process an external reference. Not
sure if regular expression route is the only thing left out... which to me
does not look like will solve the problem without loopholes.
