I much prefer RDP compared to VNC. RDP just works much better for me and
it's always faster. On my Linux boxes I usually just install and configure
Xrdp. You'll also need a nice desktop environment to go along with Xrdp. I
prefer the Mate desktop since a full Gnome desktop is not well suited for
RDP in my opinion.

The black screen that you see sounds like no programs are starting up when
you login to RDP. Verify with another RDP client that this isn't a
guacamole issue. If you're seeing a black screen, you mostly likely need
something in your .xsession file or you need to setup Xrdp to start the
desktop when you connect via RDP.
