Well, I'm not sure exactly how you're passing a blob to the CLI. It would be helpful if you pasted your commands/code and maybe there is a simple oversight.
With that said, Cassandra can most definitely save blob/binary values. I think most people use a high level client; we use Hector. If you're in PHP land, see if you problems exist in phpcassa.
