My understanding is that support for super columns will remain within the thrift API for the foreseeable future (perhaps indefinitely?) but under the covers, super column families will get transitioned to regular column families with composite column names ( <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-3237> https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-3237). If your starting from scratch, this is the approach you should probably take.

How deprecated/discouraged are super columns? Are they going to go away? What are the downsides to using them?
