The "br0: ..." messages are dmesg output: I am using the console for
input.

I have done a little more investigation and it looks as though the
problem is related to running the linux kernel via a perl expect
mechanism: if I run the exact same commands outside of perl it works.

So I suspect that it isn't a UML kernel bug, after all.
