Create a tap device for your uml machine as normal. In vmware, configure a vmnet device to use the tap device.
Personally I have been working with virtualbox instead of vmware for my non-linux emulations, as this allows the tap device to be used directly instead of having the vmnet layer of vmware. qemu has the same ability.
