In my experience, the "blaisorblade" kernels in
http://www.user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade/binaries/ work fine. For
a host running 2.4.20, any 2.4 kernel should work for the virtual
machine, I believe.

It would be helpful to give their addresses so we know which documents
did you read.

For instance, http://uml.nagafix.co.uk/ gives very simple
instructions:

./kernel ubd0=./root_fs

if you tried something like that and it failed, please post the error
messages.

Also, give more details on the host system (for instance, there is a
Debian-specific problem with 2.6 so knowing the OS you use could be
useful).
