This may not be that recent.  Debian is famous for being behind the times.

I would go with a Fedora filesystem or another which is kept somewhat close
to the bleeding edge.

Assuming you have an up-to-date filesystem, I would make sure that module
support is configured in.  Run linux --showconfig and grep that for MODULE.
