Yep, it does look like that was the essential step. I had previously tried to use the prebuilt (Debian packaged) 32-bit binary UML from within the 32-bit chroot but that attempt was also hit by segfaults. Having both Host and Guest based on same kernel tree (2.6.16.1 in this case) and using the blaisorblade patches seems to be the winning combination.
