Until about 2,75G it's sufficient to disable TT mode (and thus run in SKAS0 or SKAS3 mode) and enable static linking. Uml won't use the HIGHMEM mechanism but it will access that much memory anyway (the way used is similar to 4G/4G - SKAS mode runs always like that). Indipendently of UML, if you want a process on the host to use more than 3G, you need to apply the 4G/4G patch (by Ingo Molnar) on the host or to use an x86_64 host.
