The coolest way is to actually run the distro install procedure (by booting from the distro's initrd and installing into a blank ubd device), but that's tricky and is probably only for people with too much spare time. An easier way is to loop-mount the image on the host and install into it. Debian has debootstrap (I think), which will do the trick. I made my first x86_64 filesystem with busybox. I got tired of busybox, and installed yum on it from the host, and from there upgraded into FC4.
