Did you ever run Linux on old (pre-ATX) machines? It's the same as with
not having the apm or acpi drivers loaded ... "shutdown -h now" kills
all processes, but not the kernel itself. The kernel still runs until
the power is off.
My 80386 router died some weeks before I decommissioned it. The real
reason I did so was to make more efficient use of limited electrical
outlets. I think the init(8) crashed because of a hard drive failure,
but the box continued passing packets in perfect form.
