Ok took the host up to 2.4.31 and its now happy. The only difference
between the p4 box on 2.4.27 and my Athlon mp box was "config_netdev":
on the p4 it was compiled in and on the athlon it was a module. I
compiled it in just to be safe.

By the way, for all you freenode irc fans, we use a uml for
hosting/sponsoring asimov.freenode.net
