Hi,

There was a question on this list about Stinghorn Virtual Linux
(SVL) earlier this month, and I thought I'd clarify briefly
what it's all about. Apologies for the commercial nature of
these comments :-)

SVL is a custom Debian-based Linux distribution containing normal
UML tools (though we also work with Xen) and a rather large dose of
our own management code. It's been available since Q4 of 2004.

Basically our perspective is service-oriented: all Linux services
are preinstalled images and packaged into easy-to-distribute VM
templates which contain fs images, kernel(s), and metadata required
to run the service. So the intent is to make service distribution
and usage as painless as possible.

The management stuff we've added does a lot of things on top of UML,
for instance:
  - Virtual networking setup and management
  - VM template management
  - VM startup, shutdown, monitoring, autorestart, etc
  - Global backups (of all VMs, VM templates, settings, etc),
    produces a ready-to-burn backup/replication ISO image
  - Remote console access (using screen)
  - ... and a bunch of other things

We use SVL for our network service development and deployment
(network security services, VPNs, AV/AS etc). We also license
it for both OEM (e.g. combining multiple products into a single
physical host) and end-user use (e.g. for hosting of network
services).

Ok, I hope this clarifies up the questions posed on the list. If
you have any questions contact me by e-mail to avoid cluttering
this list.

Thanks for a great technology! Best regards,

-Sami
