Does anyone know what is being referred to here? Does this mean that
some of all of the UML code has been included in the stock 2.6 kernel?
Does it mean I don't have to install UML if I'm using a 2.6 kernel?
Alternatively, does this mean that stock 2.6 kernels have all the hooks
in them to be a host/guest OS in UML? Or does it simply mean the author
is mistaken?

Any clarification would be most welcome.

I'll try and answer your question in a round about way.

UML source code is included in the 2.6.x kernel. The later the version
you get the better the support. It is worthwhile getting the latest
patches from Jeff Dike or Paolo - links are on UML webpages.

You can host straight out of the boxes on most distributions but they
don't give the best performance as run in what is called TT mode
although I personally have found it OK. If you recompile and turn on
SKAS it makes a better host although make sure you patch as the
default has some issues.

Guests are built as a separate architecture e.g. make ARCH=um. This is
what they mean - source code is there for normal machines and virtual
machines.

Lastly it is user mode as you don't have to have kernel/root
priviledges to run a UML kernel as guest. (If you are using for
production use you probably shouldn't actually!)

Hope this helps a little.

Wow! Thank you for the speedy response!

How strange - Ian's original reply was CCed to the list, so I was trying to do the "right thing (tm)", by preserving bandwidth.

Cheers!
