Does it hangs or crashes? If it hangs, then you must avoid using a 
2.6.9/2.6.10 host kernel, since they cause this bugs (there is a workaround 
for this in some versions of UML, including 2.4.27-*bs, however upgrading the 
host kernel to 2.6.11 is a better fix).

If it crashes, that's another problem, and I don't know of a fix (some fixes 
to improve rebooting were merged in 2.6, they could be backported in 2.4 
maybe).

Can you say which tree you used?
