As linux -- showconfig says "# CONFIG_DEVFS_FS is not set" that should not be the problem.
But then I fixed the problem that no login prompt came up by:
1. Modify /etc/inittab, go to where it says "Terminals", and comment =
c2
through c6.
2. Still in /etc/inittab, change c1 to refer to tty0 instead of tty1, it's right between the bitrate and the word linux on this line.
3. Add tty0 to /etc/securetty on a line by itself.
4. When booting the gentoo UML guest system, use the following = arguments to specify how the terminals should be connected
1. con=3Dnull con0=3Dfd:0,fd:1
(See http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_User_Mode_Linux.)
However, now it says:
This is dmz.unknown_domain (Linux i686 2.6.11-gentoo-r4) 02:30:14
dmz login: root Password: Login incorrect
What did I wrong? /etc/securetty has tty0.
Thanks!
Dominik

Well, the xterm's are not started by the guest through networking, but the way
you start xterm onto the host.
The problem, likely, is that you enabled devfs but didn't install devfsd, so /dev/tty1, which is referred to by the "tty1" in the command line in inittab, does not exist. Try adding devfs=nomount and it should work.
