In the startup messages do you see a complaint "cannot register UML console driver"? If so, none of your consoles (/dev/tty1, /dev/tty2...) will be in existence and all your gettys will die. The minor device numbers for the UML consoles are 0..15, while the numbers for the regular virtual consoles are 0..63. The UML consoles are registered later, and they lose, whereas the regular VC's don't seem to be able to do anything with the (nonexistent?) framebuffer. I'm not sure, but I suspect that the VC's should have been suppressed entirely when the kernel was built. Is this possibly your situation? I'd be curious to know if suppressing the VC's is helpful.
