That was the network issue. Debian moved the socket, probably to conform to the FHS. Would have been nice to have something about this in /usr/share/doc/uml-utilities/README.debian. I am now running 2.4.27-um1 without the real time clock setting and have successfully scp my large file into the uml instance. This has always caused it to hang before.
