The most likely cause is a kernel configuration change while building it, I 
think... nobody has reported real network problems in that release, until 
now, and I guess it will

Well, you could also experiment tweaking the setting of 
CONFIG_UML_REAL_TIME_CLOCK (that's the name IIRC) while building the kernel. 
That applies only to newer releases - 24-1um behaves as if that setting is 
off.
