Closely related to servlets are servlet filters. (http://docs.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/bnagb.html) You can use custom servlets and filters with Magnolia - but i would say it is an advanced topic, and not the first one to learn if you are new to Magnolia. You can customize Magnolia on many different ways - using servlets and/or filters is just one approach.
