I can't offer you a solution without debugging. but the double language suffix (_de_de) might be a hint that the node is wrapped twice with an I18nNodeWrapper.
If this is the case you might be able to workaround the issue by using: * NodeUtil.isWrappedWith() * NodeUtil.unwrap() * NodeUtil.deepUnwrap() Hope this brings you further to a solution. In case you come to the conclusion that the system wrongly double wraps then it would be worth a bug report I guess.
