Problem solved finally. The cause was that the file <MAGNOLIA HOME>/WEB-INF/config/default/magnolia.activation-keypair.properties in one of the author instances was different from the same file of the other author instance.
The problem was that there's a load balancer before each Tomcat and when you landed in the author instance with the incorrect magnolia.activation-keypair.properties file, you wasn't able to publish, that's why the problem was "random."
