Hi We are currently working on a tutorial which also shows what you are asking for. Unfortunately it has not yet published. However, the example code is already available. Beside other things, i have created a component which renders a list of items of "My first content app". The component is called "content-items-list". When adding the component, you can select a folder from "My first content app" (latest version!) - it will render all the items of the folder.

Selecting and rendering just one item (instead of a list) is similar, actually more easy. So to summarize the strategy: Create a dialog to select an item. In the template script search the appropriate content node and render it.
