when you say "navigation does not take into account the dates attached to the news detail pages" you mean that pages in the navigation are not sorted by date? That is actually correct. STK navigation is built purely based on the order of nodes in the repository as set by the editors. If you want something else you indeed need to customise navigation (i.e. write your own model).
