The solution lay in simply bypassing the Magnolia filter chain altogether.
I just needed to create a global bypass object in Magnolia admincentral:
Configuration > server/filters/bypasses
class: info.magnolia.StartsWithURIVoter
pattern: /socket
And the connection doesn't reset or get interrupted anymore.
