At the beginnig it shortly explains how to install and use Magnolia and then mainly covers how to create and use templates. Understanding templates and how to implement and use them appropriately is a crucial point. After you've managed the hello-magnolia tutorial try to start your own custom templates fulfilling your demands and requirements. Since you've mentioned the maven archetype: That's always a very valuable tool to create modules as well as a custom bundles, however it requires at least a minimal understanding of maven.
