No, you shouldn't need to - the 'useUnicode' property and 'numToChar' still interact in exactly the same way as they did before.
If 'useUnicode' is true, then numToChar() produces two bytes representing the UTF-16 encoding of the specified unicode code unit. These generated bytes still work in exactly the same way with regards 'set the unicodeText of field' and 'get the unicodeText of field'.
So, all being well, you should be fine.
