In LC8, if you go to File/Preferences/Files and Memory and then change the value in "Number of recent files to store" it makes no difference to what is displayed in the 'recent files' list. If you do the same in LC7 it also doesn't seem to make a difference.
But if you do it in LC6 it works - and if you then change the value back up to what it was before it will have 'forgotten' what was there previously (and so effectively clearing files from the list). Now, if having done the deed in LC6, you reopen and check LC7 and LC8 you'll find they also are now boasting reduced 'recent files' Please note, I only tried this kludge on a mac (el cap) with already installed versions of LiveCode...
