Thank you everyone for the very helpful responses. Perhaps I just hadn't had enough caffeine, but for whatever reason, I just never considered trying mouseLeave. Also, I must have had something wrong with my default case in my menuPick switch statement becuase it did not seem to fire when I was trying to select a disabled menu separator.
