Thanks for the suggestion, Robert. Yep - two different wired Apple keyboards (with and without numeric keypad) plugged directly into the MacBookPro or into a Thunderblt monitor. Also checked the System Preferences Keyboard pane - no joy. This also happened with some former MacBookPros.
