Whoopee! Got it working. What I had to do was syncronize Xcode to the provisioning profiles using the Preferences->Accounts screen. Then I used one of the downloaded provisioning profiles and it worked!
Whew! Still somewhat of a mystery, but boy am I getting good at fiddling with the Apple Dev site.
