Your flesh near it certainly changes the dielectric constant of the air and
such things.  The mouse surface uses capacitance to detect position,
doesn't it?   So it is entirely possible . . .

Remember tuning AM radios and televisions with rabbit ears, and  the tuning
changing as you pulled your hand away?
