Some AV packages use Bloom filters, which are very efficient but prone to false positives, and in ways that may bear no relationship with the intended target pattern so it may not be possible to explain why.

Others are just lazy. ;)

A few years back many of us discovered a popular AV package was flagging all LiveCode-based apps as "possible malware". A quick email to the vendor put us all on the while list.
