Thanks everyone. As I am only accessing a local file(s) and there is only a single user at any one time I will go with connecting at startup and disconnecting at quit. Externals I will load on the appropriate connection.
Of course if this doesn't work I will report back, but so far everything seems to be working fine using this approach.
