Neither I'm going to set the textStyle["bold"] to either true or false,
and hence sidestep the empty vs plain question completely.
For the mixed examples, I'd say 4 in both cases but the problem is that
won't always be what users want or expect. If it's just for your own use,
that's not a problem. If it's a utility for other users, you might
consider a prefs setting or maybe a warning about what will happen with an
option to cancel.
Yes, you're right. Even if it's only for my own use, I will, sooner or
later, have a case where I find myself wanting to do different variants
at different times, so I should just ite the bullet and make it a pref
setting from day one.
