I finally, after much tooth-sucking, went to "Users" and found that the
upgrade had downgraded me from Admin; was able to reset as Admin easily
enoug; felt a real fool having been cursing and swearing for about 90
minutes.
NOW I'm having fun with the XFCE desktop blanking.
