I can't say that it *can* be done, but fifteen years ago I wrote code to open, process, and write out AIFF files. AIFF is uncompressed, and has a simple header, so it wasn't that hard to pull apart. Also, I was doing simple processing: scanning a large file for moments of silence and chopping it into smaller files. I also experimented with the volume, but that's simpler I think than pitch shifting.
