Maybe you're thinking of affixation...
Suffixes go on the end, prefixes go on the front, and infixes go
somewhere in the middle.
'Affixation' is a general term that covers all three.
And we can now move to the logical corollary that as well as suffocation
we should have
'inffocation' and 'preffocation' . . . LOL
