Thank you Richard. I think your post finally made me understand what's going on. I had failed to realize that pulldown menus are intended for us in menubars, not as freestanding controls. This may be the first time I've thought about putting a menubar in a window on a Mac, be interesting to see how it works.
I still feel though that there is a place for cascading menu items in an option menu, similar to contextual/popup menus.
