Not sure, but I think if traversal of that field is on, and its default it selects the first line. And I also think that if you set the hilited lines of the field in opencard or preopen card there is that timing issue involved so the lines are set unhilited, then the traversal stuff kicks in and voila' hilite.
To get around it (if I'm correct) use a send in time to do the unhilite from your opencard.
