There could be several reasons. The IDE might be eating the messages on startup-- or getting in the way somehow. The engine might have a timing issue. There may be an error thrown and not trapped. There could be other code executing in your stack doing something else and getting in the way. There could be frontscripts, backscripts, libraries, revLibs, etc..
There IS a reason, it just could take the better part of a day to track it down sometimes. It might work in standalone mode and not the IDE. Really frustrating is trying to debug this sort of behavior on mobile devices! Most of us know the 'send in 0 seconds' trick Mark kindly shared.
