He is invoking ImageMagick with that function on Windows, but was having trouble with it on OS X. Not sure if he resolved the issue with invoking it on OS X, because this thread seems to have become mangled somewhat. Externals are kind of wired-in to some specific interface provided by a program other than Livecode, or even used to provide functionality beyond that provided by Livecode (by writing the external in C - or Pascal if that is what tickles your fancy).
