Looks like a toolbox full of tools that specialize in opening locked boxes, one of the tools being the key that unlocks that particular box. That key, in this analogy, is the willingness of all those involved to change their minds if they have to, in order to get to the bottom of things. Bar that, and none of the other tools will work very well. Given that, any number of other tools might help.
